try this hormone helper: 3 golden recipes to get your goals


one issue that seems to be relatively widespread amongst us women at the moment: hormone imbalance. not only has it affected our (stressed-out) chief fitlosopher, as many as 80% of women suffer from hormone imbalance at some point in their lives. causes run the gamut from age to your menstrual cycle to thyroid issues to diabetes to birth control pills to pregnancy to poor diet to stress to lack of exercise to extreme exercise! so in a nutshell, pretty much anything can throw off your body chemistry + cause a life-disrupting hormone shift.

and what happens when your hormones are all outta whack? fatigue, depression, weight gain, sleep problems, allergies, migraines, autoimmune disorders, chronic illnesses - basically a whole lotta things for which we have no time. ladies, am i right??

in an attempt to get to the bottom of her own hormone debacle, our chief fitlosopher found research showing that turmeric is actually a top-notch, all-natural hormone balancer. a vibrant golden spice used for thousands of years in eastern medicine, its loooooong list of benefits doesn’t end there. not only is it an anti-inflammatory superstar, but it can also help put the kibosh on menstrual cramps, inhibit the growth of endometrial cells (contributors to endometriosis), enhance fertility, fight cancer-causing free radicals, prevent headaches and migraines, improve digestion, boost immunity, lower bad cholesterol, ward off arthritis and keep your heart in tip-top shape by preventing blood clots and plaque build-up.  

pro tip: turmeric tends to metabolize pretty quickly, and thus has relatively low absorption, consequently making its bioavailability in the body very low. to counteract this, always combine your daily dose of turmeric with either black pepper or a healthy fat, like coconut oil.

we’re gonna be honest: we had a LOT of fun finding delicious ways to add turmeric into our daily diet. here are three of our golden faves to help you reach those health goals:  

[golden milk]

serves 1

1 cup unsweetened nut milk
2 tsp maple syrup
1 tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp cardamom
¼ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp ground ginger
pinch of black pepper

combine everything in our handy dandy fitfuel mixer, shake shake shake + enjoy! (you can also use a blender.)

[bulletproof turmeric latte]

serves 1

1 cup unsweetened nut milk
1 tbsp coconut oil
2 tsp ghee
2 tsp raw honey
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ground ginger
½ tsp cardamom
pinch of black pepper
pinch of sea salt

combine everything in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until warm + pour into a cute mug. we’re fans of this purty LBM (little black mug).

[turmeric zinger]

serves 1

1 carrot
1 orange, peeled
1 lemon, peeled
1 2-3” nub of fresh turmeric
pinch of black pepper

toss the carrot, orange, lemon + turmeric in a juicer, then pour into a glass + add pepper. bottoms up, buttercup!
