we believe the children are our future. so when 15 million little ones - one in every five - are living in poverty in the U.S. alone, that definitely sounds an alarm. in fact, despite the fact that we are one of the richest nations in the world, almost 40% of american children spend at least one year in poverty before the age of 18.
this doesn’t mean these kids miss out on the latest video game or celebrity-endorsed sneakers. they lack access to basic needs like healthy food + adequate education. children who live in poverty are not only more likely to be malnourished and thus in poorer health, they’re more at risk for mental, emotional and behavioral problems, as well as lower scores in math and reading. and when you look toward the future, they’re much more likely to quit school, have a baby in their teens or run into trouble with the law.
ok, so now that we’ve laid out all the gloom + doom, what can you do to help? one of our fave retailers, Walgreens + the non-profit Comic Relief have teamed up year after year to help make ending child poverty a reality. how? red nose day. when you head into your local Walgreens + purchase #rednoseday goods, the proceeds go to charities like Boys + Girls Clubs of America, charity: water, Children’s Health Fund and Feeding America, directly benefitting children in some of the neediest communities in the U.S (+ around the world).
