hey y’all! it’s your been there, tried that adventurer katy here! chances are, you’ve been hearing a lot about CBD lately. but what is CBD, you might ask? it’s short for cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive, antioxidant compound found in the cannabis plant, which means it can help relieve pain, stress + anxiety without that “high” commonly associated with cannabis. since there’s no THC, there’s no loopiness or effect on your cognitive abilities. in fact, it's become so popular that the U.S. CBD market alone could reach $16 billion by 2025. and thanks to the 2018 farm bill, CBD is now legal in all 50 states. so what better time for us to test it out? we are law-abiding citizens, after all.
as fate would have it, i actually ended up having a TMJ flare-up the week i undertook this assignment, so i was in a lot of pain around my jaw + ear area. i decided to use the opportunity as a way to see what CBD could really do, so instead of reaching straight for the ibuprofen, i downed a 25 mg CBD capsule to kick off this little experiment.
the result? within a half-hour, i was completely pain-free. i was intrigued. could be a coincidence, i thought. beginner’s luck, perhaps. i needed more proof before i could really lean into this latest craze.
now, i see a lot of people + brands adding CBD to pretty much everything these days, from their lattes to their bubble baths. i have friends who swear by it to ease their anxieties or relax their sore muscles. so i figured why not put it to the test even further with three different applications? mixed into some afternoon sweet treats, whipped into a creamy body butter, and stirred into my bedtime tea. now i’d be the judge regarding whether or not this revered plant truly works wonders.
[CBD cake balls] makes 12-15 balls
these lil guys are nothing short of miraculous. not only are they a cinch to whip up, they’re absolutely delicious, devoid of junk + are boasting an added CBD kick for extra chillability. they took me about five minutes to make, start to finish,. then anytime i needed a little treat in the afternoon - as I tend to do between lunch + dinner - i just popped one (ok, maybe two) in my mouth + went about my day...in a surprisingly calm + pain-free fashion, might i add. the official tally thus far: CBD - 2, TMJ - zero.
1¼ cup almond flour
¼ cup coconut flour
¼ cup melted ghee or coconut oil
¼ cup maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
150 mg CBD oil
2 tbsp rainbow sprinkles
pinch sea salt
mix everything together + form into bite-sized balls. refrigerate until solid + store in fridge.
[relaxing CBD body butter] makes 1 cup body butter
i’m a huge fan of cleaner make-up + bath products, so anything i’ll be slathering all over my body’s largest organ (aka, the skin) most definitely needs to be devoid of toxins + endocrine disruptors that are so common in beauty products these days. every single ingredient in this calming body butter is clean + commonly found in kitchens + medicine-cabinets across the country. it’s super affordable to make yourself, it smells fantastic, and it has the added benefit of CBD. the verdict: slathering this on after my bath immediately put me into a state of calm. not sure if it was the CBD, the scent, or just the typical effect a nice, warm bath has on the body. maybe it was all three combined, but this was definitely a winner. while i didn’t feel the effect as strongly as i did with the capsule or the cake balls, there was still no ibuprofen needed before bedtime for my TMJ pain. this stuff has now earned a spot right by the tub!
1 cup coconut oil, in solid, creamy form
1 tbsp almond oil
20 drops lavender oil
10 drops frankincense oil
15 drops CBD oil
dried lavender flowers (optional)
mix everything together well + store in glass jar.
[calmy time CBD tea latte] makes 1 serving
this was my final CBD creation of the week + it turns out i inadvertently saved the best for last. i’m a big believer in hot herbal tea before bed. it always helps me relax + signals to my body that it’s time for sleep. and with the addition of CBD, this honey-sweetened latte not only helped slide me right into sleep mode, it soothed my throat (thanks, seasonal allergies) like a BOSS. once again, no pain medication needed before bed. i think i’ve officially defeated this TMJ flare-up + i have to say, i’m confident that CBD played a huge part in that.
1 cup filtered water, hot, but not boiling
1 chamomile tea bag
2 tsp raw honey
10 mg CBD oil
½ cup unsweetened nut milk, warmed (you can even froth it if you wanna get
dried lavender flowers (optional garnish)
steep tea bag in hot water for a few minutes, then stir in honey + CBD, and pour warm milk over the top. garnish with lavender flowers, if using.
the final verdict: i'm gonna be blunt (get it??), i was skeptical that i’d feel a difference - especially given how much pain i was in with the TMJ, but i am officially a CBD convert. personally, i felt more of an effect with the oral applications rather than the topical, but overall, i’d definitely recommend CBD to anyone looking for a more natural pain- or anxiety-relief option. it most definitely worked for me!
