why do we love red? red is vibrant, just like our fabulous fit family. red is sassy, just like our chief fitlosopher. red is passionate, just like we are about helping you live a happier, healthier life. it’s no secret that red has our hearts here at fitlosophy.
so why do we rock the red? we wear red because we stand united with the American Heart Association in an effort to raise awareness around the #1 killer of women in the U.S. - heart disease. we wear red because awareness saves lives. we wear red because on february 5th, we all join together in solidarity for National Wear Red Day, to support the 44 million American women affected annually by heart disease or stroke, and work toward shrinking this staggering statistic by inspiring people to take charge of their heart health.
while we take great pride in the lives our little fitbook has changed (and the waistlines it has whittled), this isn’t about fitting into a pair of skinny jeans. we see it not as an obligation, but a very real responsibility to raise awareness around the #1 threat to women’s health. see, it doesn’t matter if we have a small group of people with 6-pack abs, if we have an even larger group of women who are at risk for losing their lives. this is a serious matter and one that we are wholeheartedly committed to.
did you know that 1 in every 3 deaths among women in the U.S. each year is caused by heart disease or stroke? this means that every 80 seconds, an American woman is losing her life to a condition that is most often preventable. [source: AHA] in fact, 80% of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with these simple lifestyle changes:
[up your activity] consistent physical activity lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and helps considerably with weight loss and/or weight maintenance, all key factors in preventing heart disease. you don’t have to go nuts, spending hours per day in the gym. even starting out with small things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or choosing the farthest parking spot will make a big difference, then work your way up from there.
[keep cholesterol in check] too much cholesterol in the blood is a major risk factor for heart disease or stroke. schedule a cholesterol screening to find out where you stand, and try to stick to foods low in cholesterol, as well as free of trans fats. maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active will also help keep things in check.
[eat clean] follow a diet consisting of lots of plant-based foods such as fruits + veggies and whole grains. when eating meat, choose lean cuts, as well as fish. dairy should be fat-free or low-fat.
[lower your blood pressure] high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for heart disease. eating a heart-healthy diet, reducing salt intake, regular physical activity, and managing stress, are all effective ways of keeping your blood pressure under control.
[maintain a healthy weight] if you are overweight or obese, losing weight and keeping it off is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke. just don’t look for a magic pill. a combination of healthy eating and consistent exercise is the safest and most effective method for long-term weight-loss.
[lower blood sugar] adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke than adults without diabetes. regular check-ups are critical for diabetics, as is following a diet low in sugar and grains, eliminating trans fats and processed foods, and exercising regularly.
[snuff out smoking] lighting up is the biggest preventable cause of premature death in the U.S. there are many programs available to help you quit, both through hospitals, as well as over-the-counter.
