small business makes the world go ‘round. entrepreneurs are the pulse of our economy. here's why small business matters on a macro level:
- small businesses provide jobs for 48.5% of the U.S. population and account for 63% of new jobs created.
- businesses with <20 employees represent approximately 90% of the nearly 5.7 million firms in the U.S.
- small businesses produce 46% of this country’s non-farm GDP

but here’s why small business matters to me.
as a proud third-generation entrepreneur who has been in business for nearly 8 years, i can tell you that nothing (nothing!) is more vital to the success of a business than its people. you can have the most innovative idea, ooze passion out the wazoo, and even have investors lining up to infuse capital into your brilliance – and that’s a great start; but when all is said and done, if you don’t have a team behind you to execute, you have nothing. success will be short-lived, not to mention lonely. entrepreneurs may start a business because of their own ambitions; but those who survive and even thrive? they are in it for others.
in honor of small biz saturday, as the founder + chief fitlosopher, i want to take this opportunity to introduce you to the team behind the scenes. we may be a small biz - but our passion, our drive, and our commitment to our fab fitbookers is anything but small. without further ado, meet my team. (i heart them.)
director of all things creative
on board since day one, lani is the brilliant (and highly patient) creative force who translates my ideas to reality. she may be a graphic designer by trade, but she single-handedly has been the confidence i needed every stop of the way, believing in fitlosophy even before it existed. her ability to take my sketches, often times pie-in-the-sky creative direction, and somehow deliver digital brilliance continues to amaze me. my nitpicky, OCD-driven madness is matched only by her stellar standard of excellence and equivalent attention to detail. from product design and packaging to marketing and branding, lani does it all. and does it (extremely) well. when she’s not in adobe design land, lani puts family first, spending time with her hubby and two boys. she also happens to be fitlosophy’s in-house tree-hugger, reminding us to reduce, reuse, recycle – and not kill bugs.
chief of fit operations
recently nicknamed “T-on-it”, tianna or “T”, is exactly that: on it. she keeps our operatons in tip-top shape, managing everything from forecasting and financials to manufacturing and logistics. and me. she’s my partner-in-crime, helping to devise our strategy at a high level, and then diligently keeps us focused on our goals. there’s absolutely no way i could manage and execute our strategy without tianna’s entrepreneurial drive, laser-like focus, and fierce loyalty to all-things-fitlosophy. she is the behind-the-scenes that makes it all work, from products being made to ensuring that they hit the shelves on-time, every time. tianna is a proud USC alumni and 4-year song girl, graduating with a degree in entrepreneurship with a minor in nutrition. fitlosophy’s in-house health-foodie, she can often be found working at her desk through the lunch-hour sipping a green juice spiked with spirulina + munching on kale and quinoa. born and raised in orange county, tianna is often at the beach with her boyfriend and two dogs.
sales + community creator
graduating from cal state long beach with a degree in kinesiology, nicole started with fitlosophy as an intern but her work ethic, infectious personality, and passion quickly earned her a spot on the fitlosophy roster. with a personal training certification from NASM, she’s our resident fitness expert - among many other things. from creating killer video footage faster than i can warm up my coffee to snapping stellar product pics, her technical skills are a welcome addition to our marketing mix. working with me to oversee our sales, what makes nicole invaluable is absolute dedication to making our customers happy. her social media engagement has been pivotal in creating camaraderie in our fitbooker community – because she cares. when she’s not commenting, liking, sharing, or serving our customers, she’s probably at the crossfit box with her beau knocking out yet another PR. ‘cause she rocks.
katy: the latest addition to the fitlosophy team is our sassy southern peach, miss katy. a journalist by trade and blogger on the side, katy is our chief content creator who has mastered the art of churning out creative content that adds value for our fitbookers. her way with words provides a perfect balance of fitness-infused, nutritionally-sound, healthy-living information infused with fitlosophy-speak. and she’s mastered the whole lowercase-thing like a pro. living in atlanta with her hubby and 3 young boys, katy somehow balances it all with grace and a smile on that sweet face. and always a dose of sarcasm just to keep things real.
carlos: last but not least, our director of non-important business. no really, that’s his title. as my founding business partner, carlos has been pivotal to the strategic growth and success of fitlosophy since inception. from helping pack and ship orders in the early days, to serving on the company’s board of directors, he’s been my sounding board for strategy – and moral support during occasional bouts of entrepreneurial melt-down. he has seen fitlosophy go from an idea to reality – and been there every step of the way. to say i couldn’t have done any of this without this man would be an understatement. currently living in newport beach, my mexican muchacho can be found most days at the race track training horses, at the driving range hitting golf balls, or drinking nespresso. or the occasional don julio reposado.
trust me when i say: i am ultra-grateful to be surrounded by this team who makes our vision + passion a reality.
we are small.
we are mighty.
we are fitlosophy.
