did someone say ROCK THE RED??? oh, don't mind if we do! we at fitlosophy heart red. and we heart you. so we want to take a moment to have a serious convo with our fiercely fabulous female fitbookers. as women, we tend to focus a lot on reproductive and breast health in an effort to prevent things like breast cancer, thinking of heart issues as more of a male problem. but don't be fooled ladies: the #1 killer of women in the U.S. is actually heart disease! this often undetected illness claims the life of one american woman every 80 seconds, killing 6X as many women as breast cancer each year. one in every three women, to be exact. let that sink in.
the recent tragic losses of the mother-daughter duo, carrie fisher and debbie reynolds, have shone a spotlight on this oft overlooked aspect of women’s health. while the average age of female heart-attack victims is mid-sixties, they can happen as early as your twenties, with symptoms including chest pain, jaw and/or arm pain, heartburn, shortness of breath, lightheadedness and breaking out in a cold sweat.
the good news: 80% of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. this means avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy blood pressure, cholesterol level and weight, remaining active and controlling your blood sugar to drastically reduce your risk.
so how can you do your part to raise awareness? we thought you’d never ask! here are 3 ways you can #goRED for a cause that’s (quite literally) near + dear to all our hearts.
today is National Wear Red Day, in support of Go Red For Women, a movement that encourages women to take control of our heart health and helps fund research for the American Heart Association. it’s simple: #goREDwearRED to show your support for women everywhere who are affected by this all-too-prevalent disease + spread the word about why you #goRED. it can be something as simple as a red accessory (a la our chief fitlosopher + her red feather boa) or full-on red ensemble from toe to head. this act of sporting like the best color ever is a simple way to raise awareness by shining a bright (red) light on this deadly (but preventable) disease.
[enjoy a heart-healthy snack]
a healthy diet is absolutely crucial for optimum heart health, and if you’re anything like us, your snack attacks sometimes leave you with a jonesing for a little something sweet. we heart this sweet “pasta” bowl not only because it’s delicious, but because it’s filled with heart-healthy ingredients. apples lower bad cholesterol that can cause plaque build-up in your arteries, as well as help to regulate your blood sugar. blackberries are packed with heart-healthy phytonutrients and soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol. almond butter also helps lower cholesterol, as well as body fat, which consequently lowers your risk of heart disease, and coconut oil helps promote normal platelet function.
apple-berry “pasta” with almond butter “sauce”
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 apple, spiralized
½ cup blackberries
1 tbsp (no-sugar-added) almond butter
- melt the coconut oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat, then add the apples + berries.
- sprinkle desired amount of cinnamon over everything + stir to combine, then saute for a few minutes, about 5, stirring every so often.
- drizzle almond butter over the top + eat your heart out!
[get your heart pumpin’]
